The straws of life (LifeStraw) - Drinking water for the World
$ 3 for a device that promises to end the thirst of the world. The cane in one piece, you can filter water for a year, with no removable parts, electrical or maintenance.
The straw of life or LifeStraw, a portable water filter, a bright blue color of the size of a flute which is able to filter water from any pond, lake or tries. Its inventor of 35 years, Mikkel Vestergaard Frandsen, has drunk from soda, water puddle, and water from the lake through the Nairobi LifeStraw. "At first we must strive hard to take her first sip, but after that the straw was wetted is very easy to drink water." Mikkel says.
Most users LifeStraw never drink anything more than simple water, but the impact on their lives will be big. More than 1 billion people worldwide lack access to safe water, and more than 6,000 people die daily of diseases like typhoid, dysentery and cholera from drinking contaminated water.
Over 2000 devices have been sold, mostly to associations of humanitarian aid. Currently the product is being re-designed for mass production.
